Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there are many countries not accepting foreign travelers or workers. Therefore, schools in these countries are prioritizing local hiring over accepting international teachers.
However, we can expect that as some countries manage to control COVID-19, they will ease their restrictions. At the same time, if schools are able to find local candidates that are qualified, it is likely they will hire those candidates ahead of international teachers.
Some schools are also hiring international teachers but allowing them to teach virtually from their home countries until it is safe to travel. Also, some countries will accept candidates from regions where COVID-19 has been contained, but not accept teachers from regions that are still seeing a high number of active cases.
One last thing to note: schools are already hiring for next year. While some countries are closed to international travelers or workers right now, schools are recruiting teachers now with the expectation they will be able to travel in time for the 2021 school year.
